Left, a Green Caddis and a Hendrickson Mayfly Nymph, all collected from the Middle Grand. #flyfishingLast week I volunteered with The Friends of the Grand River (FOGR) to stock the Grand with 33,000 Brown Trout. The FOGR are currently fundraising to enable the installation of new signs along the river informing anglers of the Special Regulations that apply when angling for Brown Trout (Catch-and-Release, single barbless hooks). The old signs, printed on plastic, are worn, deteriorate quickly and are now mostly illegible and need continual replacement. This important communication needs reinforcing with the public so that the fishery can remain viable. New, metal signs will have a long life and be a constant reminder of the Special Regulations. Consider making a donation of $40 to FOGR, the cost of one metal sign. The @friendsofthegrandriver in collaboration with @onresources stock young #browntrout into the river below Shand Dam. This year, unlike previous years, a small group of volunteers paddled the river in canoes with battery powered live wells to be able to spread the 33K young trout out into riffles and runs, the goal to increase their survival rate. Under the leadership of FOGR President @robvoisin and supervised by Stocking Director Jason @captain_clooney King, teams of paddlers covered the river below the dam all the way to Weisenberg bridge. This represents a significant amount of volunteer work that was usually done by a very large number of volunteers, and due to Covid-19, by a very limited crew led by Jason the last 2 years. The canoes and battery powered live wells, designed by @knarrbrad for the Conestogo River, enable to fish to be spread evenly down the river. Let’s hope that this strategy leads to greater biodiversity of the river, and success for anglers too!
